Incentive ‘Lacking’

(N.Z. Press Association' AUCKLAND. August 30. If industry was to win export markets it would need incentives which had been lacking for some time, Mr J. B. Connett, president of the Penrose Industrial and Progress Association, said at its annual meeting last night. The depreciation rate allowed was quite inadequate compared with other countries, he said. One of the best incentives to industry would be

the use of indirect taxation.

"High personal taxation takes the ‘ginger’ out of workers who feel with £7 or £8 taken out of their take-home pay for tax they are working long overtime hours for nothing,” he said. “Industry suffers similarly.”

There was a dire need for immigration if industry was to grow. “Industry itself can help by sponsoring more apprenticeships for immigrants,” he said.
