FATAL SWIM

West Berliner Shot In Canal (N.Z. Press Assn—Copyright) BERLIN, August 29.

East German border guards today shot and killed a drunken West Berlin man swimming in a canal that runs along the East-West border, the Associated Press reported. The man swam over to the East Berlin bank, police said, and was riddled with bullets as he tried to return to the West side.

The man jumped into the water in West Berlin. He swam into East German water, and a border guard fired a warning shot. Reaching the East bank, the man pulled himself on to a grassy spot. After a while he jumped back into the water, and swam for the West bank. The East German border guards then fired about 20 shots at him. Although hit, the swimmer reached the West bank, but died in hospital.
