WESTERN ADVISED ON CHATHAM CUP FINAL
The chief provincial soccer coach, Mr R. C. Carter, has helped Western plan its tactics for the Chatham Cup final against Miramar Rangers at the Basin Reserve, Wellington, on Saturday.
While in Auckland the week-end before last, Mr Carter watched Miramar beat Ponsonby, 2-1, after extra time, in the North Island final.
“Miramar plays typical cuptie soccer,” Mr Carter told the Western players at their last training session last evening. “They are strong, fast and with great reserves of stamina. They are solid in defence, hard tacklers in midfield and rely upon breakaway attacks to score.
"They use the long ball to move from defence to attack, thumping long kicks to send their forwards away,” said Mr Carter. "They reiy on the centre-forward, L. Taylor, to spearhead these attacks.” Mr Carter named the New Zealand representative goalkeeper, P. Whiting, the lefthalf, D. Ward, and the Fightback, C. Melvor, as the team's outstanding defenders. "If Western can play constructive soccer and take thei r chances in front of goal, it can beat Miramar," said Mr Carter. “Ponsonby had the better footballers until they reached the shooting area Then they wasted all their sound build-up play by being unable to finish off movements." 1
