PREVENTING CRIME
Insurance Men To Be Trained
(N.Z. Press Association)
WELLINGTON, Aug. 29.
Insurance officers will be trained in crime prevention methods as part of a major police offensive against burglars.
The police and insurance companies hope the scheme will do much to halt the steady increase in burglaries and other property thefts.
The national head of the crime prevention section of the Police Department, De-tective-Sergeant R. L. Butler, said the project could have an important effect on future crime.
“As many as 90 per cent of New Zealand crimes could be prevented by normal security precautions,” he said.
Mr Butler said crime prevention officers and selected lecturers from private security organisations would give the first course to insurance inspectors in Wellington before the end of the year. Similar courses would be held later in Auckland, Christchurch, Dunedin and Hamilton.
