Ashburton Competitions Festival Opens

The Ashburton Competitions Society’s annual festival opened yesterday with nearly 400 individual competitors and groups giving performances at the three sessions during the day. Forty-eight classes in the dancing, speech, and vocal and instrumental sections were decided yesterday. The festival will continue all this week, ending with demonstration concerts on Saturday. Keen public interest was shown in the competitions yesterday, and audiences were rewarded with many excellent items.

Among a number of outstanding performances was that of two young Christchurch competitors, Leighton Brown and John Caygill who gained 82 points in the piano duet, open. They .chose as their piece the “Slavonic Dance No. 2,” and the judge Mr D. F. Sell (Christchurch) remarked on their very assured and convincing performance. He said they played particularly well together. Miss J. Archer, of Ashburton, gave an excellent performance to win the women’s section vocal solo against strong competition. She gained 81 points for her rendering of “Spring.” Her voice was of excellent quality and very even over the whole range. Only one point separated each of the major placegetters. There was strong competition in the tap dance class for Ashburton County competitors under 12 years. This was notable for the high standard of performances of competitors and excellent costuming.
