“MIND THAT CHILD”

Road Safety Campaign Motorists must watch children on bicycles for unexpected manoeuvres, for children were often thoughtless, impulsive and unpredictable, and drivers should make allowances for this, said the district officer of the Transport Department (Mr D, L. Hogan). A road safety campaign with the theme “Mind that Child” will be conducted by the department during the week starting September 5. Last year 17 child cyclists were killed in New Zealand and 719 were injured, and altogether 76 children under the age of 16 were killed and 2710 were injured, said Mr Hogan. Nineteen child pedestrians were killed and 679 were injured. Although in many cases the children involved in accidents were at fault, many would not have been injured had motorists anticipated an unexpected move and allowed a margin of safety. Every road-user should practise intelligent anticipation and take additional precautions when children were about, Mr Hogan said. In Christchurch this particularly applied where children on cycles were concerned.
