Could Become Annual Affair
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. An athletic meeting between the United States and the British Commonwealth seemed certain to be held in Los Angeles next July and it was likely to become an annual affair, said R. Williams, New Zealand gold medallist on his return from the Commonwealth Games. He said that while the Games were in progress in Kingston two Americans flew to arrange details of a meeting with representatives of the Commonwealth countries. They were Colonel Hull, representing the American Athletic Union, and Mr G. Davis, representing the “Los Angeles Times,” sponsor of the proposed meeting.
The newspaper would pay all travelling and accommodation expenses of the Commonwealth athletes, and any profits from the meeting would be donated to charity. It was expected that the Commonwealth team would be selected on performances recorded in the six months before the meeting. Three athletes for each event would probably be selected from the Commonwealth.
