Shield Hockey
Firm, fast grounds and splendid weather provided a splendid setting for the secondary schoolboys’ India Shield hockey tournament, which started in Christchurch yesterday. Most of the favoured teams won their matches, but St. Paul’s Collegiate (Hamilton) caused a surprise by beating Northland College. 3-0. The Linwood High School A team, one of the favourites, began confidently with 9-0 and 10-0 wins in Its section. King's High School (Dunedin) and Hamilton Boys’ High School gave good displays in Section A. Visiting teams were amazed at the hardness of the grounds; a number of players found the amount of run disconcerting. Results were: Section A.—Hamilton B.H.S. 1. Westlake B.H.S. 0: King’s H.S. 5. Cashmere H.S. 2: Hamilton 4. Hillmorton H.S. 0; King’s 2. Westlake 0. Section B.—St. Paul’s Collegiate 3, Northland College 0: Shirley B.H.S. 5, Linwood H.S. B 1: Northland 2. Waitaki B.H.S. 1; Shirley B.H.S. 0. St. Paul’s 0. Section C.—Heretaunga College 4. Christ’s College 4; Paoanui H.S. 3. Taumarunui H.S 0: Wanganui Collegiate 2. Christ’s College 1: Heretaunga 7, Taumarunui 0. Section D. —Linwood H.S. A 9. Rathkeale College 0: Tauranga Boys’ College 5. Marlborough College 2; Linwood H.S. A 10. Rangiora H.S. 0; Tauranga 4. Rathkeale 0. NELSON GAMES Nelson College beat Hagley High School, 2-0, in the opening match of the secondary schools hockey tournament at Nelson yesterday. Results were:— Section A.—Horowhenua 4. Takapuna 1; Nelson 2, Hagley 0. Section B.—Pukekohe 3, Nelson B 1: Auckland Grammar 5, Waimea 1. In the first day of play In the Rankin Cup for secondary school hockey at Papatoetoe Christchurch Boys’ High School beat St. Kentlgern College. 6-1 Ashburton College won a game and lost a game at Wellington, beating Colenso High School, 3-0, and losing to Wellington College, 0-6, yesterday.
