Handy Washing Hints
(FROM THE "CHRISTIAN SCIENCE MONITOR”)
Washday once was the housewife’s hardest day of the week. But progress has changed that.
Now there are no more black iron pots to fill, there is no firewood to chop—sometimes no ironing. Now all you need is a pushbutton washer and dryer, half a dozen or so different kinds of washing powder and detergent, two kinds of bleaches, 17 basic stain removers, and an encyclopedia of washing instructions! Nylon gets the credit for starting it all. Now the big washday question is how to launder any number of different fabrics of the genus “permanent press.” “Read the instructions.” advises Miss Ermalee Moore, home service director of Boston Edison Company, "on the garment, on the detergent package, and on the washer.” But, she says, she knows most women will not do it. So, she has supplied a few general hints as second best. DO: Turn garment wrong side out before laundering. Wash it when it becomes lightly soiled, instead of wearing it “one more time.” Remove stains before laundering. Choose the correct water temperature. Cool or warm water causes the least wrinkling, but heavily soiled clothes will need hot water. Use a short agitation period in washer. Five minutes should be sufficient Rinse in lukewarm or cold water. DO NOT: Use too much detergent. Overcrowd washer, or dryer.
But do not dry one garment alone in dryer; add a few clean towels to help tumbling action. Mix whites with coloured clothes. Neglect to check a garment’s fabric content Leave clothes in dryer after drying cycle has been completed. Remove at once and hang up.
