THEFT OF £3000

Theatre Safe Broken Open (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Aug. 22. Thieves got more than £3OOO when they broke open the office safe in the Civic Theatre, Queen street, last night. Eleven months and three weeks ago to the day the same safe was opened and £4600 stolen. The thief was later caught and sentenced to five years’ gaol. The sum was from Saturday’s takings at the Civic and four other Queen street theatres. The loss 'is covered by insurance. A Rotorua service station safe was blasted open during the week-end and £650 stolen. Two Rotorua shops were broken into the same night. Rings and watches worth £l3O 15s were taken from the Rotorua Gift and Jewellery Centre. A raid on a fashion shop yielded only about £2 in cash.
