ISTANBUL, August 22 Aid poured in today for the stricken earthquake area of eastern Turkey, where the known deathroll is now 2241—just over 2000 of them in the devastated town of Varto. Plans are already being advanced to build a new town to replace Varto. The Turkish Cabinet is to consider the plan for a new Varto today, and is expected to take an immediate decision. Tremors continue to be felt in the provinces hit by Friday’s earthquake. In Hinis, where 173 people died. 106 shocks were recorded in two days. The town trembled
almost continuously yesterday. Unofficial estimates of the total earthquake toll now range as high as 4000. Israel has sent an air shipment of medical equipment, blood plasma and blankets. Gifts of money, clothing - and other merey aid have been announced from Britain, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, Italy, and elsewhere. West Germany has pledged every possible assistance. An official of the British relief organisation Oxfam has flown to Turkey. Two Royal Air Force transport planes are due in Ankara tomorrow with
a 20-man mountain rescue team, an eight-man mobile surgical team, and relief supplies. International Red Cross tents and blankets are ready for dispatch from Beirut. The picture shows the front of the hospital at Hinis, shattered by the earthquake.
Beef Supplies.—The Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry is urging the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to agree to a plan to import 10.000 tons of beef. Australia and New Zealand, the United States and Canada are possible suppliers if the plan is adopted.— Tokyo, August 22.
