Opossum Control

Sir,—When rabbit boards were first started, the sale of skins and carcases was prohibited. The professional rabbiter had either to accept work on a rabbit board or look for another job. In the winter months he killed far more rabbits than any bpard employee—no 40-hour week for him. Now Mr SpencerBower, chairman of the Waimakariri Rabbit Board, is agreeable to opossum hunters other than board employees hunting opossums for their own profit. This does not make sense. It seems the rabbit boards have taken on more than they can handle. If it was good enough to prohibit the sale of rabbit skins, why not opossum skins?—Yours, etc., OBSERVER. August 20, 1966.
