August 24 The war that has broken out among the Continental powers seems likely to bring about a complete reconstruction of the map of Europe. ... Of the three nations engaged in the war the sympathies of-Englishmen will naturally be given to the Italians. The immediate cause of the quarrel between Austria and Prussia arose out of an act of unscrupulous aggression on a weaker power—they are robbers quarrelling over the spoil. But the Italians are actuated by motives of purest patriotism, a desire to free their country from the

hated presence of foreign tyrants. The burst of long pent-up feeling as the moment of deliverance appeared at last at hand is described as something overwhelming. No one can read of the glorious enthusiasm shown by the inhabitants of almost every Italian city, and especially by the tens of thousands who crowded round the banner of Garibaldi, without a thrill of admiration for such magnificent daring for a purpose so noble, or without deeply feeling that a leader and an army animated by such spirit is certain to do great things.
