PHILADELPHIA The St. Catharine's Rowing Club of Ontario outraced New Zealand by a narrow margin on Saturday to win the coxless foul's at the United States rowing championships on the Schuylkill river.
St. Catharine’s was clocked in 6min 31.3 sec for the 2000-metre course. New Zealand came across the finish line in 6min 32.1 sec.
Rowing in hot, sunny weather and some breeze, the New Zealand crew made a strong sprint on the approach to the island about a quarter of a mile from the finish line.
However, the Canadians had enough in reserve to hold off the challenge and win by about onethird of a boat length. New Zealand had won Its qualifying heat yesterday by beating St. Catharine's by about two feet and one-tenth of a second with a great sprint in the last 15 yards. Eight Qualifies A New Zealand eight will compete for the championship today after having qualified on Friday. New Zealand finished second In the second heat, two-thirds of a length behind Vesper Boat Club, of Philadelphia. The New Zealand crew was: G. M. Cawood (bow). P. H. Masfen (No. 2), J. G. Gibbons (No. 3), M. A. Larsen (No. 4), D. C. Boswell (No. 5), A. W. Grey (No. 6). D. L. Storeye (No. 7), A. 1. Webster (stroke), and R. E. Page (cox).
