Roads Policy

Sir,—Concern at Labour’s proposal to remove tolls on the Auckland harbour bridge and Lyttelton road tunnel in five years will be felt throughout the country. As a former chairman of the Roads Board, Mr Watt should have wanted to protect the autonomy of the board. The acting Director of Roading has pointed out that Labour’s proposal would mean either less motorways for Auckland or an increase in taxation or, even worse, less money for roads in rural areas. Has Labour’s advocacy of improved roading in rural areas been just “hot air” after all? Less motorways for Auckland are unlikely when one remembers that if Labour becomes the Government eight Auckland members of Parliament would dominate its Cabinet. Increased taxes would be the result and we would once again pay more for petrol and tax on new vehicles as a result of Labour’s irresponsible pre-election promises.—Yours, etc., BLACK BUDGET AGAIN.
