Ichtar Impresses In Awapuni Trial
tl The Press’’ Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Jetmate, Ichtar, Janeville and Laramie were among the most impressive of the open-class horses which appeared at race trials yesterday at Awapuni. Nenagh and Gold Mint were the best of the raced maidens. If the unraced division Final Guy did best. A Pakistan colt and a Golden Plume filly took the eye in the parade for two-year-olds. Jetmate, second in his heat, was given an easy gallop, but impressed by his apparent fitness. He will start against the sprinters at Foxton and should be ready for a good showing. Ichtar won this heat. He was near the lead all the way and hung on gamely to beat Jetmale by half a head. Ichtar has not been the same horse since his operation for a wind condition so his showing was encouraging. Another to appear in this heat was Janeville, one of last season’s top two-year-old fillies. Janeville, which looks to have wintered well, seems forward. She will resume in the sprint at Foxton. Harry Lauder beat Laramie in the open race over seven furlongs. Harry Lauder led all the way, but Laramie covered extra ground and was most pleasing. He has thrived lately
and will race on one of his favourite courses at Foxton on Saturday week. Myree and High Lady won the hack event. Myree ran a great trial for the hack five furlongs at Carterton on Saturday when she outran her rivals over five furlongs.
Gold Mint, which is likely to notch his first success at Foxton next week, was as expected too good for his rivals in the first heat of the maiden race. He won orii the bit from Phareno with Fair Swell third. Gold Mint is well above average.
Nenagh, which broke down when finishing second to Shanaz at Levin last November, won the second heat narrowly but well.
E. Ropiha produced a strikinglooking colt in the two-year-old trial. A youngster by Pakistan II from Mijulin, the colt is a half-brother to Automaton. He began brilliantly in his two-furlong heat and raced away to win easily.
Lautrec, a Knight’s Romance colt, was second and an unnamed My Pal colt was third A big Test Case —Ruve gelding was fourth. Hatter’s Castle won the first heat from an unnamed Ruddington colt, with Port Rego third. Hatter's Castle led all the way and won well. He is a colt by Castle Donnington from Innocence. A Golden Plume filly and High delight were the best of the fillies.
