£l500 Guest Let Down By £1 Part

(A’.Z. Press Association) SURFERS’ PARADISE. The failure of an engine part costing £1 forced Jack Brabham to withdraw from a demonstration race he had flown 12,000 miles to drive in on Sunday. The organisers of the Surfers’ Paradise Speed Week had paid £l5OO to fly Brabham’s car to Australia and back to Europe. A rotor-button in the RepcoBrabham failed as Brabham was driving the three-litre racer out of the straight at close to 100 miles an hour.

He pulled up in about half a mile, nearly three miles after the start of the 20-mile race.

The appearance of the Repco-Brabham on Sunday was the first by a formula I racer in Australia and one of the biggest drawcards to the 12.500 spectators.

Brabham will race the same car in the Italian Grand Prix on September 4. He already has a commanding lead in the world driving championship. J. Stewart won Sunday’s feature race in 12min 29.6 sec at an average speed of 96.13 miles an hour.
