WATER FOR BELFAST
Good Progress Of Work Although a completion date I is not in sight, good progress I is being made with the highpressure water reticulation of Belfast by the Waimairi County Council. Tenders, to close on August 26 have been called for the construction of the 38ft x 18ft pump-house to be built at Darroch street. Tenders are also out for the sinking of the 12in well, which is expected to be 100 ft deep and deliver; about 1500 gallons of water a 1 minute.
The main pump is due to arrive at the end of August, and the council has on hand a diesel-powered stand-by pumping set similar to those at other council pumping stations. They cut in automatically if the power fails. Electrical equipment is also on order. Most of the reticulation is completed, but an Bin main has to be laid east of the railway line in the vicinity of the soap works and the Canterbury Frozen Meat Company’s works. Both these plants have their own watersupply but could eventually be connected to the council system. A feature of the reticulation is that it will provide Belfast with a reliable source of firefighting water, which now comes from various wells.
