A 37-year-old woman, the latest patient to .undergo an artificial heart implant here, relaxed cheerfully tonight and enjoyed a brief visit from her i family. A spokesman for Methodist Hospital, where the operation was performed yesterday byDr Michael Debakey. said the woman was progressing satisfactorily and had rested well during the night. The latest hospital bulletin said the left ventricular bypass pump was functioning well, and added that the patient's cardiac response was satisfactory. The spokesman said the woman's family had asked for her name to be withheld. It was the third such opera tion performed by Dr Debakey and his team of physicians. The other patients, both men in their 60s. developed complications after the operation and died. The woman had suffered from rheumatic heart disease which resulted in progressive heart weakness.
