SMOKING IN THEATRES
Complaint To Board A complaint that youths were smoking in theatres was received by the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board last evening from Mr E. Charles. He said he had seen a man in the front stalls of the State theatre smoking a cigarette. Youths lit cigarettes and threw matches on the floors, he said. He also complained that the circle at the Savoy theatre was not safe in his opinion. “We know the management of the theatres have trouble with youths who try to break all the rules,” the chief fire officer (Mr L. R. Osmond) said. “There are no theatre firemen these days. If anyone has ia complaint, then it should be made to the manager.” The brigade was not a prosecuting authority, Mr Osmond said. On any complaint it had to ask the police to take action. Theatres were inspected to see that there were safeguards against fires and to check on means of egress, he continued. The circle at the Savoy theatre complied with the requirements of the egress code. Mr Osmond said there were no by-laws prohibiting a person from smoking in a theatre; it was only a condition of the licence.
