LAPIDARY CLUB

Visit To Malvern Hills Two buses and 18 cars were required to carry members of the Canterbury Mineral and Lapidary Club on a field trip to the Malvern hills last week-end. Mr H. Kobb, of Whitecliffs, led the club to areas of marine fossils and sand pits notable for large calcareous concretions with occasional shells. A profiled papier mache map model of the district was used to demonstrate the geological sequence of depositions of the Jurassic period 180 million years ago, land forms, and movement. After a barbecue meal on the bank of the Selwyn river, the club visited the Hororata river to hunt for rocks and minerals. Some good specimens were found. The subsequent monthly meeting was addressed by the president (Mr W. F. Heinz) on land forms and movement in Canterbury and the West Coast and the occurrence of mountains, glaciers, coal measures, andesite and rhyolite, minerals and elements in solution, and the origin of agate.
