Exchange At Ilam

I The largest private autobnatie branch telephone exchange in the South Island [will be opened at the new Canterbury University campus. Ham on August 20. The exchange will come into service the day after the Gov-ernor-General (Sir Bernard Fergusson) officially opens the university. The regional engineer (Mr H. W. Wilkinson) said yesterday that the exchange would initially handle 600 internal lines with an ultimate capacity of 1300 lines. He said the exchange would be equal in capacity to one serving a town about 2000 people.
