Bronze For Sutherland (Special Crspdt NZ PA ) KINGSTON. The Wairarapa sheep farmer, T. Sutherland, won a bronze medal when he finished third in the .303 rifle shooting. After the final stage Sutherand was tied with R Stewart (Papua—New Guinea) for second place, 13 points behind the gold medal winner, Lord Swansea, of Wales. In the shoot-off over 1000 yards, Stewart scored 5, 5. S for a total of 15 points, and Sutherland scored 3,3, 5 for 11. New Zealand’s other entrant in the event, M. Gordon, was fifth, with a total of 379. Lord Swansea, leading after the first two stages by three points from W. Crawford (Scotland) and five points from Sutherland, was in brilliant form on Monday and scored a 75 possible over 900 yards. He dropped five points over 1000 yards but his 145 aggregate for the day’s shooting was a magnificent effort. Sutherland, with 70 over the 900-yard range, kept his place in the field but dropped eight points over 1000 yards, to allow Stewart to creep up and tie. The shoot-off—one compulsory Sighter and three further shots over 1000 yards—started badly for Sutherland When his sighter went astray, With Stewart on the bull every time, the New Zealander could not make up the leeway.
