Air Travel
Sir, —1 am grateful to "The Press” for reprinting the excellent article on the forthcoming I.A.T.A. conference by Michael Donne of the “Financial Times.”-It is most heartening to read that the trend in air fares must be downwards. Will this conference also do something about the vexed problem of unused seats? Present passengers are
certainly paying more than necessary if one thinks of the rationalisation that could be achieved. But this is not all. Air travel ail over the world is subsidised directly and Indirectly in so many ways—also by those who are never likely to enjoy the benefits—that it is about time for the public conscience and that of the airline operators to be stirred by a few thoughts on economic democracy in this field. —Yours etc., KEEN TRAVELLER. August 8, 1966.
