Those Who Wait...
TT is probably just as well A that the Taranaki farmer, J. Major, has an equable temperament. Since he was first selected for the All Black team to tour the British Isles in 1963-64, Major has been associated with test teams for four years but has yet to play in an international although he has been a reserve on 15 occasions. On the British Isles tour he was understudy to D. Young in the five tests but when Young retired he did not get his place. Instead
the Counties player, B. E. McLeod, was chosen to play against Australia in the three tests against Australia. McLeod held his place in 1965 against the Springboks and looks likely to play in all four tests this season. As a forward, Major is very good. He is a devastating tackler, quick to the loose ball, and a dogged chaser of the ball. But his hooking just lacks the quickness needed to ensure that he will not only gain, but also not lose tight heads in test matches.
