OMISSION A SURPRISE
(N.Z. Press Association* WELLINGTON. J. Compton, Wellington’s 17-year-old New Zealand junior champion, is a surprise omission from the eight seeds for the men’s singles at the New Zealand badminton championships.
He is a member of the squad from which the New Zealand team to play Japan in the Thomas Cup tie at Dunedin in three weeks will be chosen.
Compton has just returned from a five-month tour of Malaysia during which he received coaching from the world’s finest players. The men’s singles seedings, in order, are: D. B. Higgins, R. H. Purser, L. Bristol, W. Johns, M. Stossel, G. Hinton, O. Clegg, P. Boatwood.
The women’s seedings are: Miss G. Simpson, Mrs V. Gow, Miss A. Glenie, Miss G. K. Tompkins, Miss M. McFarlane, Mrs J. Bignell, Miss B. Gormack, and Miss P. Aitken.
