Olympic Player In Basketball Team
An Australian Olympic player will be included in the University of Adelaide men’s basketball team to play Canterbury in Cowles Stadium on August 13.
He is 21-year-old W. Lind, a 6ft guard who is currently the highest scorer in South Australian A grade basketball. A member of the Australian team which performed with much success at the Tokyo Olympic Games, he has represented South Australia every year since 1959. Lind promises to be the personality of the University of Adelaide tour and could be one of the outstanding players to play in New Zealand for some time. He is a member of the Australian Universities team.
However, it is unlikely that the touring team will have to rely too much on his ability for it has great allround strength. Recently it won the Australian University basketball championships and contains three South Aus-
•tralian State representatives. Player-coach of the side is K. Scott. At 22 he is very young to be coaching an overseas touring side, but his success with the Combined Australian Universities team, which he also coaches, marks him as a coach of outstanding qualities. He is 6ft 4in, the tallest tourist, and will play in the important centre position for his team. He was a South Australian representative in 1964. The team has an average age of only 20 years and an average height of slightly more than 6ft. It is expected to be of similar strength to the South Australian side which went through New Zealand unbeaten last season. It arrived yesterday and departs after competing in the New Zealand Universities annual tournament at Auckland at the end of August. The team is:—
K. Scott (player-coach), A. Need, J. Sutton, N. Opie, R. Walker, M. Stabarnoff, A. Beas, W. Linde, A. Switajewski. Mr D. Rainey is the manager.
