WELLINGTON, August 5. The number of people treated or maintained in public institutions during the year ended March 31, 1965, was 289,743, said the Health Department in its report to Parliament today. This included 2041 persons maintained at some time during the year in non-hospital beds, mainly in old people’s homes run by hospital boards.

The number of attendances by out-patients was 2,770,177.

For 1964-65, the average daily expenditure on individual patients treated in general hospitals was £6 4s 4d. On the average each patient cost £9O 4s, compared with £B3 10s in the previous year. Institutional staffs, excluding administration, district nursing, farm, and miscellaneous staff, totalled 26,749 on March 31, 1965, for the 16,410 established beds in hospitals and old people’s homes.
