ALLOWANCES FOR TRAVEL
Critic Offends Mr Lake (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 2. An allegation that currency restrictions were making it almost as difficult for a New Zealander to travel abroad as it was to escape from East Germany to West Germany was criticised by the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) today. “This is a ridiculous statement which gives a completely false impression of the effects of measures to control spending of overseas exchange on overseas travel,” he said. He was replying to allegations made by Mr D. C. Butler, of Whakatane, who recently returned from overseas. Mr Lake said the present allowance for overseas travel might not represent the limit a few New Zealanders might wish to spend in the more expensive areas—but the provision of £B4 a week exclusive of fares for a man and wife was, in most cases, more than adequate.
