EMERSON DECIDES
Last ‘Grand Slam 9 Bid (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY. The former Wimbledon champion, R. Emerson, has made his last attempt to complete the coveted “grand slam” of tennis. His failure to retain the Wimbledon title this year was his last attempt on the most elusive of tennis achievements. The 30-year-old Emerson said in Brisbane yesterday that he had decided to curtail his playing programme next season, and that he would not play in Europe. This means that he will miss the French title, one of the four major titles which constitute the "grand slam.” Emerson plans to restrict his major title appearances to the Australian, South African, Wimbledon and United States championships. “I’ve been trying for about eight years to win the ‘slam’ but have not been able to put them all in one year,” Emerson said. “As much as I would like to join the select company who have managed the ‘slam,’ I will have to ease up next season.” The only players to complete tennis’s “grand slam” were D. Budge (United States) and R. Laver (Australia).
