Selwyn Assured Of Table Tennis Title
Selwyn clinched the Canterbury senior inter-club table tennis competition last evening when it easily beat its closest rival, Avonside, and gained an unbeatable lead of five points with only one round of matches to play.
Not since Eagles won their l first round clash has Selwyn i been beaten and its trio of ; Canterbury representatives encountered little difficulty overcoming the strong Avoni side team. V. N. Brightwell won all three singles for Selwyn while H. P. Holt (Selwyn) and K. Ward (Avonside) won two each. Eagles comfortably defeated Celtic, 9-3, and so moved forward to equal second position with Avonside. J. Armstrong continued his three-year unbroken sequence of singles successes while D. J. Kalin and Mrs M. J. Shadbolt both played well. B. T. Edwards was in form for Celtic. Linwood’s Good Form Linwood redeemed a recent series of indifferent performances by convincingly defeating last year’s champion ride, Wallabies Red, 9-3. G. W. Makinson and J. E. Kyle each won three singles and were in commanding form. Makinson, in particular, hit his forehand with ferocious power. Wallabies Green continued its good run by crushing University. C. W. C. Tilby was out of form and won only one match but G. R. Saunders and M. R. Spinks won all three singles.
