Carpenters Not On Job
Two carpenters who on Tuesday defied the union ban on jobs on which Masonry Services, Ltd., of Christchurch, was alleged to be blocklaying by labouronly contract, were absent from the same job yesterday.
They had been working beside a man building veneer and another b u i 1 d i n g a chimney in Carruthers street, Hornby. Officials of the Canterbury Carpenters' Union yesterday reported their absence to the Canterbury Trades Council of the Federation of Labour. The president of the Canterbury Trades Council (Mr R. A. Hill) said that all Jobs on which blocklayers of Masonry Services, Ltd., were working at any time since Tuesday, July 26, were “black." By 4 p.m. yesterday 13 Jobs in the Hornby and Avondale areas had been declared “black.” Two of the houses were in Carruthers street. One house had been declared black in each of Boston avenue, Silverwood place, Hounslow street, Cutts road, Woodbury street, Warren crescent, Pine avenue, Eglington street, Wainoni road, New Brighton road.
Mr Hill said that a report from officials of the carpenters’ union showed that to the best of their knowledge there were now no carpenters working on jobs that had been declared black. Yesterday, builders were requested not to direct their men to work on any of the black jobs. Mr Hill said that while the managing director of Masonry Services, Ltd. (Mr H. P. Oberg) continued to deny that men were being employed under labour-only contract, on two jobs Masonry Services trucks with scaffolding erected on them were being used for the building of chimneys. "In our opinion this is a very nice link between a labour-only contract and Masonry Services,” said Mr HilL
