Children In Shops
Sir, —I, too, have been nauseated for years by this habit of some people of seating children on food-shop counters. The practice is far more prevalent than the Medical Officer of Health seems to think. I would suggest the immediate passing of a by-law, and the posting of notices stating that infants should be kept in baby carriages in shopping areas. These notices could be placed adjacent to those pertaining to dogs, and although they might make many a cat laugh, food hygiene would be greatly served. —Yours, etc., EILEEN McNEIL. August 3, 1966.
1 Sir, —There is a familiar • ring about the official com- • meat on a complaint made by ’ a woman storekeeper that • small children brought in by r customers were contaminat- ! ing her grocery store: 8 “There’s a law about it .. and, apparently, rather a lop--1 sided law in this case. Whose ! responsibility are the children s —the shopkeeper’s or the cus- ■ tamer's? One recalls an in- , cident that occurred a longish ■ while ago In a dairy shop. A ! woman customer brought in ■ a small girl who forthwith ; started fiddling about with anything within reach. Re- - suit: a stand full of sweets 1 came crashing down, spilling the contents all over the floor. The proprietress of the shop ' was not amused; and said so in no uncertain terms. All she got by way of apology was an indignant, “Weil, they ought, not to have been there," which is quite typical of the sort of perverted mentality that is far too prevalent.— Yours, etc., Ikf T August 3, 1966.
