RACING Jester Jinks Pleases In Cup Trial

Jester Jinks raised hopes for a Riccarton victory in the Winter Cup on Saturday when he galloped well on his home track there yesterday.

Jester Jinks was running well alongside his Winter Cup rival, Sabell, after a mile in Imin 47 2-ssec. They galloped on the No. 1 grass, which was soft and cutting out. With E. G. Low up, Jester Jinks was giving weight to Sabell (C. Kerkvliet). The last half-mile took 52sec, time not often bettered by those pitted at the short sprint distance.

The light-weight jockey, N. Eastwood, will ride Jester Jinks in the Winter Cup. Earlier the Grand National candidates, Prince Robin (M. D. Peters) and No Offence (T. Duncan) ran a mile in Imin 52 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 55 l-ssec. No Offence faded out badly in the Homeby Steeplechase after jumping brilliantly in front for a fair way. His connexions have not yet settled for a start in the Grand National, and will delay a decision until tomorrow. Strong Bracket Eiffel Tower (W. J. Hillis) and Full Course (J. Carvalho) worked away steadily from the mile, and were not above three-quarter pace until they approached the half-mile. From there they sprinted home in 54 4-ssec. Eiffel Tower will form a strong bracket with Macdonald in the Jumpers’ Flat, the first leg of the T.A.B. double on Saturday. Kumai, another hurdler with strong form on the flat, was one of the first tried at speed yesterday. Ridden by S. B. Robertson, Kumai sprinted half a mile alongside Pahi (O. Cleaver) in 52 2-ssec. They had worked up to speed steadily after starting slowly from the mile and a quarter. Fastest over half a mile were So True (F. Austin) and Gladaub (J. Carvalho), which dashed home in 50 2-ssec. They remained on terms to the end. Relief in weight should help Gladaub to produce a sound performance in the Winter Cup. Sb True is in the Paparua Handicap. The best at six furlongs was the imported Royal Student. Ridden by A. Telfer, he recorded Imin 20 4-ssec and beat Gold Shower (F. H. Skelton) by a length. Gold Shower dropped behind when she slipped on the home turn, but picked up ground in the last furlong. Smart Sprint Natter (N. Cowles) showed her fitness for the Paparua Handicap in running half a mile in 52sec under a good weight. Shoshone (F. H. Skelton) and Mister Bud (I. Reuben) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 21 3-ssec, the last four in 54 3-ssec. Shoshone won against milers at Washdyke two starts ago and was a fair fifth in the Camla Hack Handicap at the Christchurch Hunt Club’s meeting. She may make an impression in the mile Avonhead Handicap on Saturday. Royal Blue (G. Gullery) led Matea (M. McCann) by half a length and then there was a wide gap to White Rajah (F. H. Skelton) after running six

furlongs in Imin 22 4-ssec, the last half-mile in 55 l-ssec. Matea will be left at Riccarton with W. H. Beck after the Grand National meeting. The Levin-trained Sabaean mare failed in the Brabazon Handicap and has been scratched from the Winter Cup. Time and Tide (B. Collins) sprinted six furlongs in Imin 22 3-ssec, the last four in 54 2-ssec. On his best form he should be one of the brighter prospects in the Paparua Handicap. Senator Jack (W. H. Beck), looking solid and bright to start a Riccarton campaign in the Avonhead Handicap, sprinted half a mile in 53 4-ssec. Not Hurried Magic Way (Gullery) led Together (F. H.‘ Skelton) over half a mile, run easily in 55 2-ssec. Fair Gap and the Master-ton-trained Oriental (F. Austin) started their half-mile at a stronger pace and finished in 52 2-ssec. Howe Good (Austin) recorded Imin 7 3-ssec for five furlongs and 53 2-ssec for the last half-mile. Her stablemate, Bold Invader (S. B. Robertson) dashed in from the three furlongs in 37 2-ssec. He is a fit Winter Cup light-weight. A slow start cost Bold Invader any chance he might have held in the Brabazon Handicap last Saturday. Summer Magic (Borthwick), a fit Winter Cup candidate from Gore, finished his

work with a half-mile in 54 4-ssec. He should be still improving with racing, and should take beating in the £2OOO mile race on Saturday.

His fourth in the Brabazon Handicap followed a second behind Jester Jinks at Washdyke. Millie Small (E. G. Low) and Avobelle (A. Telfer) ran in from the half-mile in 54sec.
