Softballers Want N.Z. Rule Changed

The Canterbury Softball Association will support Hutt Valley, Waikato and Auckland in an effort to have metal cleats made legal at the annual general meeting of the New Zealand association at Wellington on August 13.

Last year metal cleats were banned in favour of rubber cleats.

Cleats should be optional, said Miss N. Beale. Metal deals were barred in most parts of Australia but they were used by the American and Japanese women’s world series teams in Australia. Raising Tour Levies

The Canterbury association will support a remit put forward by the New Zealand council, one of five concerning tour levies. The remit reads: That the tour levy for the next two years stand at a figure of 9s 6d upon every adult player and that in respect of the next selected team each member be required to contribute £25 and that associations contribute £25 for each selected player. This remit is aimed to restore the tour fund to £6965 within two years. The balance is now £6193 but the World Series in Mexico will cost approximately £3853. Otago and Hutt Valley have sent remits advocating a reduction in the levy; Waikato has suggested the abandon-

merit of the present system and, with Auckland, has requested a discussion of tour levies.

An Otago remit that national inter-provincial tour naments be extended over no move than seven days, with a maximum of six playing days, will not be supported because of its restrictive nature.

Canterbury's delegates (Misses Leask and Beale) will advocate the producing of birth certificates at schoolchildren’s tournaments, the revision of the national interdub titles to their former tournament basis instead of inter-zone and national finals, the consideration of paying scorers at tournaments similar to umpires and that interisland schoolchildren's selectors have no other duties at tournaments.

An Auckland remit that national schoolchildren's tournaments be abandoned and replaced by three regional tournaments will be strongly opposed. Auckland's suggested regions were Auckland and Taranaki provinces, Wellington and Hawke’s Bay and the South Island. Late Entries

In an effort to make a draw prior to the start of the 1966-67 season, no late entries will be received after the season begins. The chairman (Mr M. R. Bell) last evening successfully moved a rescindment of a 1962 motion that late entries received during a season be absorbed into the draw.

The association proposes to complete the draw before the season begins and to announce an early closing date for entries.
