WAHINE ON TIME

Made Up For Late Sailing

After a smooth first southbound crossing, the new driveon ferry Wahine berthed at Lyttelton yesterday morning without a hitch. There was a handful of people at the wharf to welcome her.

“Although we sailed from Wellington three-quarters of an hour late, we were still here on time; averaging 18 knots,” said the master of the Wahine, Captain E. G. K. Meatyard. “This sample of shipbuilding shows just what the British shipyards can do when they want to,” said the managing director of the Union Steam Ship Company, Mr F. K. Macfarlane. “She is one of the best advertisements for their exports they can have. “The absence of vibration is most marked. The Wahine has fine sea-going capabilities.”

The 8944-ton, clipper-bowed Wahine carried 418 passengers, 45 cars, which were discharged in 15 minutes; 80 trade vehicles and 19 freight trucks, which were away by 9.30 a.m. Later, unloading will be faster.

Last night the Wahine sailed with 325 passengers, 21 cars, and four trade chassis.
