BRIEFINGS OF PRESS

Criticism Of U.S. In Vietnam

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) NEW YORK, Aug. 2.

Official American press briefings in Vietnam were sharply criticised by four American correspondents In Saigon, the “New York Times” news service reported. The four correspondents appeared in a national educational television network programme on Sunday night. They said briefings by United States military spokesmen were often pale, late and inaccurate.

A “New York Times” correspondent said the information officers in Saigon were more interested in policy than in facts.

Other reporters said they would prefer formal censorship to news management, which “squashes news at the roots.”
