Kingston’s Games

The eighth British Empire and Commonwealth Games will be opened officially at Kingston by the Duke of Edinburgh tomorrow; and on Friday a programme of events lasting until August 12 will begin. A record entry of 36 countries and more than 1000 athletes augurs well for the success of the games which, among the older Dominions and the newly-independ-ent States alike, rank second in athletic importance only to the Olympic Games. New Zealand is strongly represented, numerically and in the quality of its team, which should bring further distinction to a country which has achieved commendable results at previous Empire Games.

In this particularly competitive age, sport has suffered badly. The upsurge of rough Rugby in New Zealand has been accompanied by reports of players being ordered off in World Cup soccer matches and of brawls in Rugby League tests in Australia. At Kingston, perhaps, the athletes of the Commonwealth may be able to show that sportsmanship is a term not entirely out of date.
