Antique Silver
Sir,—From all the exquisite antique English silver available, even here in Canterbury, you have to illustrate Saturday’s article, “To-day’s Best Investment,” with the silver travelling chamberpot used by a Lord Mayor of Leeds, and only about 100 years old at that. It reflects, however, an accurate assessment of today’s news values and, under the polish, the character of the second half of the twentieth century. The comment, “nostalgia for the safe quiet world of the past,” were better illustrated by something really breath-taking, like the famous Richmond Cup introduced to flat racing in 1770, than your choice, which can only recall its inconveniences. —Yours, etc., A. B CEDARIAN. July 31, 1966.
