SKIERS RETAIN THEIR TITLES

BL Gardner (Amuri) and Miss K. Guy (North Canterbury) retained their titles when the Canterbury individual ski- i n g championships were held at Mount Cheeseman during the weekend.

Miss Guy completely outclassed all the opposition, as had been expected, and won by the huge margin of 174 points. She won the slalom by 17 seconds and the giant slalom by 21 seconds. Two juniors. Misses V. Odie and R. Willis, did best of the remaining women and Miss Willis was runner-up in both events. The standard In the men's events was particularly high and Gardner needed to ski considerably better than he did last year. He gave a fine display and. unlike his closest rivals, made no mistakes. M. Dennis won the giant slalom in the worst conditions possible. Strong gusts of wind and thick snow showers reduced visibility to 15 yards at times but Dennis, along with Gardner and G. Nevell, handled the conditions excellently. Gardner won the slalom by the narrowest of margins from C. Womersley and P. Willis. Nevell missed a gate on his first run and so lost all chance of winning the combined title, while Dennis lost a ski.

Willis, a late entrant, gave a fine display to finish both runs in less than 50 seconds although running last in the field.

Nether course was an easy one and a feature of the two

days’ racing was the small number of skiers who fell. Race results and positions for the combined titles were: — Men Giant Slalom.—M. Dennis (C.W.S.C.). 1:36.0. 1; M. Gardner (A.S.C.), 1:37.2. 2: G.
