N.Z. Surprises In Table Tennis
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ADELAIDE. New Zealand’s table tennis representative team beat Australia three matches to two in a test match in. Adelaide on Saturday night.
The New Zealand team of A. R. Tomlinson (Auckland) and B. A. Foster (Dunedin) caused a minor sensation. The result was in doubt right up to the last service. The win was the first by a New Zealand team since 1962 when a touring team was able to take the second test and square the rubber. In New Zealand in 1964, Australia won all three tests. Though neither New Zealand nor Australia is highly regarded in international table tennis, Australia has been considered in the past to be much stronger than New Zealand in the sport. Tomlinson and Foster went into Saturday’s games the underdogs after a comparatively poor showing in the South Australian championships last week. Results (New Zealand names first): A. R. Tomlinson defeated C. C. McDonald, 6-21, 21-18, 21-16, 6-21, 21-9; B. A. Foster lost to M. Thomson 21-23, 21-17, 18-21, 12-21; Tomlinson and Foster beat McDonald and Thomson, 21- 21-15, 21-16; Foster lost to : McDonald 13-21, 5-21, 17-21; Tomlinson beat Thomson 21-13, 21-17, 17-21, 22-20. On Friday night Tomlinson and Foster beat M. Jan and K. Edwards, 18-21, 23-21, 22-20, 22- to win the South Australian men’s doubles champlon- . ship.
