Charles Eliminated By Rule Breach

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) INDIANAPOLIS. R. J. Charles, of New Zealand, was disqualified in the third round of the £42,000 •‘SOO” festival open golf tournament in Indianapolis on Saturday, along with the defending champion, B. Crampton and two American players. The disqualifications came over a misunderstanding whether the continuous putting rule applied in this tournament. Under the rule, which is aimed at speeding play, golfers are allowed to clean their ball only once on the green and cannot touch* it afterwards unless it is In the putting line of another player. It has been applied in only four Professional Golfers’ Association tournaments so far this year, and the four disqualified

contestants admitted that they had not understood that it also applied now. The other two disqualified were H. Kneece and H. Blancas.

Blancas completed the round with a 72 and a 222 total, but the other three did not finish. After two rounds Charles was 140, Crampton 143 and Kneece 145. Newdlck Qualifies At Ramsteln, West Germany, B. Newdick, of New Zealand, qualified for the Romstein golf tournament with a total of 143. Leading the field was J. Garailde, of France, on 134.
