J. Armstrong Wins South Island Table Tennis

J. Armstrong and Mrs M. J. Shadbolt of Canterbury won the 1966 South Island table tennis championship senior singles titles when the championships were held at Dunedin on Saturday. It was a convincing win for Armstrong who was only once extended, by H. P. Holt (Canterbury) in their quarter-final match. He defeated V. N. Brightwell (Canterbury) in straight games in the final. Mrs Shadbolt’s win was well deserved as she met and defeated two players who had beaten her in tournament play earlier in the season. She defeated Mrs M. Brown (South Canterbury) in straight games in the final. The expected final between Mrs Shadbolt and Mrs T. May (Canterbury) did not eventuate. Mrs May lost her semi-final In straight games to Mrs Brown, the upset loss of the tournament. The junior girls’ events were dominated by the Fogarty sisters from Otago, while D. Couper (Auckland) and D. Leong (Wellington) dominated the boys’ events. The Canterbury junior played reasonably well against this strong opposition.
