Airport Building Plans
Plans for building extensions at Christchurch Airport include an £82,000 equipment department workshop for the National Airways Corporation and a new international and cargo terminal. A contract is expected to be let early next month for an 18,000 square feet equipment department workshop for the engineering headquarters of N.A.C. The cost of the workshop, £82,000, has been approved by the management of the airline. Construction is subject to the approval of the Building Programmer. . The workshop will be built at the south-east end of No. 4 hangar. Mr A. J. Smaill, N.A.C.'s chief maintenance engineer, said the project was the air-
line’s first major building since the engineering headquarters administration offices. “This new workshop will give us greater facilities to overhaul our test equipment, manufacture it, and provide maintenance for our general workshop equipment,” he said. The engineering headquarters needed the extra space to cope with its Increased work, said Mr Smaill. A walk-in cool store would be provided in the facilities contemplated for the airport, said the air cargo development manager of Air New Zealand (Mr J. M. Helleur) at an air cargo seminar yesterday. A smaller room for vaccines and a larger room for chilled commodities were contemplated, Mr Helleur said. Mr Helleur said a new international air cargo terminal was being planned for Christchurch airport.
Full facilities would be available for both shippers and consignees. This would include customs clearance.
