DEMOLITION OF DAM

Army Exercise Next Week-end The Downlands water supply dam across the Tengawai river near Fairlie will be demolished by the No. 3 Independent Field Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Engineers next week-end. After a flood in 1965 the dam was found to be damaged beyond economical repair and the Levels County Council decided to offer it to the Army as a demolition target. The demolition will be done by a team of 40 soldiers. All except one Regular Force warrant officer and a sergeant are territorials. A small advance party will move into the area on July 29, to establish a base camp for the main body, which will arrive the next day. It is expected that the dam will be blown up on the Sunday.
