Cut Both Anniversary Cakes

Mrs A. Fright, a first-day pupil of Waltham School, who cut the cake at the school’s sixtieth anniversary celebrations, did so again at the week-end when the school celebrated its seventy-fifth arniversary. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr H. P. Smith) conveyed greetings and congratulations from the Mayor and City Council, and Mr W. J. Cartwright congratulated the school on behalf of the Canterbury Education Board.

Other speakers Included the present headmaster (Mr J. S.

Luke), Mr W. L. Stewart, a former headmaster, and the South Island Superintendent of Education (Mr S. E. Hamilton).

The roll call of first-day and first-decade pupils was called by Mr- R. M. Lewis, wso asked those of each decade to

make themselves known to receive the applause of the assembly. The dinner was attended by 800. More than 50 others who applied for tickets could not be accommodated.

i More than 600 attended a ! church service at the school ; yesterday afternoon. Music ■ was provided by the Sydenham Salvation Army Band.

The present school choir of 40 was conducted by Mr K. Newson. Between 11 a.m. and noon

today the school will be open to former pupils to allow them to see the work of present students. A comprehensive programme of sports, dancing and drama has been arranged for this afternoon.
