FLIGHT TO CHATHAMS
Charter By Fishermen A National Airways Corporation DC3 has been chartered by a fishing company in Christchurch for a flight to the Chatham Islands tomorrow. It will leave Christchurch airport at 8 a.m. and return at 4.30 p.m. There will be 12 persons aboard on the outward flight, including the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk). The aircraft will return to Christchurch with the same number of passengers. A spokesman for the company, Mr P. Smith, of the Hotel Embassy, said the charter was to take some of his company’s men over there and to bring others back. There would also be a sick person on the return flight, he said. Mr Smith said the aircraft was also taking hospital supplies to the islands. “We are having to charter a plane because there is no other way. If we find we have a full loading then we may do it again,” he said. To charter a DC3 for the return flight to the Chathams costs more than £3OO. A DC3 was chartered for the same destination by a Bluff fisherman last month.
