Massey Holds On To Beat Lincoln

More cohesion among the forwards gave Massey College a somewhat undeserved victory against Lincoln College, by 15-12, on a heavy and slippery surface at Lincoln yesterday. Magnificently led by P. Rumball, the Massey forwards dominated the first half and gained a 12-3 lead at half-time. Lincoln fought back in the second half but was unable to make up the leeway. From the outset, Massey showed a greater appreciation of the conditions and moved forward as a unit, dribbling the ball and chasing it enthusiastically. Lincoln was rocked on to its heels and not until the second half did it produce a counter to Massey's driving play. In the second half the positions were reversed but the Massey defence held firm and M. O'Callahan’s better goal-kicking decided the issue. J. Keoghan had a bad day for Lincoln, missing four conversions and two penalty goals.

H. Meech was the outstanding Lincoln forward, and was well supported by D. Watt, A. Banks and T. Sundstrum in the tight, bruising forward movements. Apart from Rumball, none of the Massey forwards stood out as it was their policy to drive together. D. J. Davison, P. Le Lievre and W. Tapseli were the best Lincoln backs but Tapsell's kicking, although suited to the conditions, was generally too powerful and he enabled Massey to clear without worry. G. Rowsell withstood a torrid afternoon well in the half-back position. Apart from O’Callahan, R. Ivess was the best Massey back but all did better on defence than the Lincoln line.

Massey’s tries were scored by S. McPherson, R. Ivess and J. Scotland, while O’Callahan kicked two penalty goals. D. J. Davison (2), P. Le Lievre and W. Tapseli scored for Lincoln.

Massey won the match between the second XVs, 10-5, while Lincoln won the soccer, 6-5.'
