POWER PEAK

(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, July 20. The consumption of electricity in New Zealand reached a record peak on Tuesday night because of bad weather throughout the country, said the district electrical engineer for the New Zealand Electricity Department in Dunedin, Mr A. F. B. Lusk. The demand on the department’s network reached 2430 megawatts, about 7} per cent higher than for the peak period last year.

All six generators at Benmore, the country’s largest source of hydroelectric power, were running, delivering 510 megawatts. Roxburgh and Waitaki were fully loaded. The inter-island transmission line transmitted 400 megawatts to the North Island, Mr Lusk said.

There were no difficulties with the increased load and the department still had a reserve of electricity in hand, he said.
