End Of An Era
More than 350 members of the Railway Enthusiasts’ Society took part on Saturday in the society’s fifth AucklandTaihape train excursion which may be the last for which steam engines will be used. The Railways Department has advised the society it cannot promise to provide steam locomotives for excursions in the North Island next year. Two KA-class steam engines hauled the 16-carriage train from Taumarunui to Taihape and back and for the rest of the trip two DA-dass, 1400horsepower diesel engines were used. Stops were made to enable enthusiasts to take photographs, and several also recorded the sounds of the train an tape
